The world lost an amazing man, husband, and friend on March 22, 2017 with the passing of B.W. “Perk” Perkins. Perk was born on March 20, 1924, in Halifax, Virginia, to Dave and Fannie Perkins. He was the oldest of four children in a hard-working tobacco farming family.
At the age of 17, Perk entered the US Navy, and spent the next 30 years on ships throughout the world in every conflict including WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He retired in 1975 as Master Chief Petty Officer.
In 1975, Perk married the love of his life, Rose. For the next 41 years, they traveled around the world so that he could golf at as many courses as he could! He was also passionate about his Harley Davidson, which he rode until he was 88 years old.
Perk’s other loves were his goddaughters and grandchildren. Katie and Craig Johnson and sons Landen Robert and Leighton Webb live in Arizona; while Shannon Stewart and her partner Matt McAllaster live in San Diego.
He had so many friends and made many memories in all of his associations. He was a member of Elks Lodge 1812, Fleet Reserve Administration, and VFW Post 2275. Every morning, he rode his Harley for coffee at the Grand and The Landing in El Cajon, and will be missed greatly by the friends he made there.
Perk is preceded in death by his parents, Dave and Fannie; sister, Juanita; brothers, Randolph and Oliver; and mother-in-law Myrtle Wolin. He is survived by his wife, Rose; goddaughters, Katie (Craig) Johnson of Winslow, AZ; Shannon Stewart (Matt McAllaster) of San Diego; grandchildren, Landen and Leighton; brother-in-law Bob Wolin; and many nephews and nieces in the Eastern US.
Visitation was held on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 between the hours of 4-8 pm at El Cajon Mortuary..
Committal Service will be held at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Drive, San Diego, on Monday March 27, 2017 at 10:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, send donations to VFW Post 2275 in El Cajon for scholarship funds.
