Burt was born in La Salle-Peru, Illinois on January 15, 1954, to the late Arnold Kerp and Darlene Fieser. He initially lived in Illinois but with his dad in the Navy, he moved around to different cities throughout his youth. He spent time in Rhode Island, Monterey, California, Virginia Beach, Virginia and Pensacola, Florida, and was able to explore his love for the ocean with his first free diving adventures (holding his breath as long as possible and exploring underwater) before becoming certified in scuba diving when he was older.
As a young boy, Burt was also very involved in the Boy Scouts, earning the rank of Life Scout. Burt loved the outdoors and honed many of his outdoor skills (knots, whittling, fire building) with his time in Scouting and using those skills throughout his life. Eventually he became a Scout Leader and taught others the same skills, including his own son, Joshua. Burt spent time with his dad fixing things or rebuilding them and over time, became very skilled at it. When Burt joined the Navy at 17 years old, he became a plane engine mechanic and built his mechanical foundation for life. He furthered his love for mechanical skills by rebuilding engines as an auto mechanic and as an aircraft assembler.
After leaving the Navy, Burt became very involved in Martial Arts, earning the Rank of 5th Degree Black Belt and Master in Tae Kwon Do and thoroughly enjoyed teaching other students. In 1984, Burt combined all his previous knowledge and love for mechanical skills and started working as a Locksmith for the next 40 years. He was also involved in Toastmasters and Le Tip and thoroughly enjoyed being part of various communities and helping others whenever possible.
Burt met his wife, Lynn, while mountain biking with friends and they quickly shared a love for mountain biking and other outdoor activities. They were married for over 25 years, sharing their passion for adventure with 100-mile-long backpack trips, adventure racing, scuba diving, Tae Kwon Do, and traveling. After many years of their own adventures, they started their family adventures with the birth of their children, Joshua and Devyn. As a family, Burt continued to share his love of the outdoors, mechanical skills and the art of movement with his children – through activities such as Tae Kwon Do, Boy Scouts, mountain biking, hiking, and swimming in the ocean.
In addition to his parents, Burt was preceded in death by his sister Diane Mullenberg and sister Valerie Guenther. He is survived by his wife, Lynn, son Joshua, and daughter, Devyn; brother-in-law, John Guenther and brother-in-law, David Medart; sister-in-law, Karen Medart; nephew and his family, Jason Guenther; nephew and his family, Russell Guenther; niece and her family, Megan Mullenberg, nephew and his family, Eric Mullenberg; Step Aunt and Uncle, Marilyn and John Leach, and several cousins.
