Waleed was a great mentor and friend to me over the past 25 years that I knew him.   I remember my initial meetings and discussions with him when I joined Roche and I admired him for his scientific knowledge and expertise and learned so much from him.  Over time my deep respect for "the professor" led to a friendship that I will not forget.  I will never forget the visits that we made to see Waleed in Del Mar and most of all I will never forget the enduring love and affection he had for Buddy who was the center of his world.   I am grateful I got to speak to him last week and so sad to hear last night about his passing.   My condolences go out to all his family and close friends who will feel his loss.

I cannot imagine not having Waleed around for our weekly Skype calls, annual visits and occasional holidays we spent together.

Waleed was also very instrumental for my career. He secured me a postdoc position at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology 40 years ago. During that time we became close friends and I have very fond memories of the Friday night dinners with the Aachen gang in New York City as well as several holidays we took together.

Waleed was such an interesting and entertaining person to be with! Everybody enjoyed his perspective on life and great sense of humor. It never got boring with him, wherever we met. It was only last week during our last Skype call that he made me crack up. He told me that after he is released from the hospital, he will move into his home office room and "now will have a house with 4 bedrooms, able to host even more guests".

Waleed, we miss you tremendously and will never forget you! Keep in touch wherever you are now!

Great mentor and a friend. Will miss our weekly phone calls (mainly you telling me off for not visiting you and buddy regularly). I will miss your Iraqi jokes being sent to my work email. 

We first met in 2015 at the APS dinner in Orlando. You were so happy you found another Iraqi peptide chemist, and we stayed connected since then. I’ll always remember that you were the one who convinced me to move from New Zealand to USA for postdoc, and  taught me how to look at the big picture when it comes to drug discovery. Thanks for all you did for me! 

You are loved by many, and will definitely be missed. Rest in peace!

Today’s news hit me like a tonne of bricks. Just last week I was telling my friends about Uncle Waleed and the amazing man that he was. Always such a big supporter of mine during my training, and made sure to make me laugh in my most pressing times. When I moved to NYC for a few years, it was just me and Uncle Waleed at a Yankees or Giants game, or at his favourite restaurant in Jersey for Easter and Christmas dinners. We always made it a priority to meet for drinks when he was in Toronto or I in San Diego, no matter how short the trips were. His wisdom, his kindness, his humour - all things I admired immensely about him. I swear I could listen to his stories for days and never get bored. He taught me so much about my grandparents which I always appreciated as well. He had a way of making me feel like I could accomplish anything. He was a true academic that made this world a better place through his craft. He enjoyed his life to the fullest, and it was truly a blessing and an honour to have known him and be in his presence. 

I will miss you more than words can describe, Uncle Waleed. You’ve left a big gap in all our hearts. I love you SO much. May you rest in eternal peace.

Waleed was more than a friend, he was our brother. When he left Germany on 1st of May 1980 to start working for Laroche in the United States, we cried when he parted.
He said 'why are you crying, I will come back.
And now he is gone and we will never see him again.
But, dear Waleed, we will never forget you and keep you alive in our memory. Thank you for the time we spent with you.

Waleed was a truly great scientist, professional, colleague, and friend.  He was always my "great uncle", full of advice, funny stories, and kindness.  Our lunches together were some of my fondest memories at Roche.  
My deepest sympathies and condolences to his family.  He was a true giant of his field.  He will not be forgotten.
