In the early hours of September 6th, 2023, Garry Newell Raymond passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Garry, a beloved husband, father, father-in-law, brother, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather, was 79.
Born to Leitha and Newell Raymond in Jackson, Michigan, Garry spent his youth on his family's dairy farm, on the football field as both an offensive and defensive player for the Leslie High School team, and earning the prestigious title of Salutatorian. Amidst these commitments, he also pursued his artistic side, honing his acting talents in the drama club and showcasing his musical prowess as a trumpeter in the school band.
Garry enlisted in the United States Air Force, leaving Michigan State for assignment in Mount Laguna, California, and it was there that he met the love of his life, Patricia (Patti) Wright. The two were married on July 14, 1967, and their family grew quickly with the arrival of three children, Timothy, Betty, and Krista. Following over eight years of dedicated service to his country, Garry was honorably discharged and settled with his family in San Diego.
Garry was renowned for his unwavering work ethic and a remarkable aptitude for fixing anything that came his way. He was a respected and talented aerospace maintenance engineer at GKN/Chemtronics in El Cajon, retiring in 2015 after an illustrious career that boasted a record of never missing a single day of work over three decades.
In peaceful rest, Garry now reunites with his beloved Patti in the next life. He leaves behind a legacy that endures through his two siblings, three children and their partners, ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and dozens of adoring nieces and nephews. Those who had the privilege of knowing him will fondly remember his quick wit, kindness, unparalleled craftsmanship, and his penchant for extra-sharp pencils.
Garry will be laid to rest beside his wife at Miramar National Cemetery. Memorial services will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which works to further Parkinson’s research, at https://www.michaeljfox.org/.
