Howard William Cayton

Howard “Bill” Cayton was a strong man with a big heart who was incredibly proud of his children and loved his wife. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend who was always there for the people he loved.

Bill proudly served his country in the United States Army from February 1965 through February 1968. His service was an important part of his life, reflecting the strength, dedication, and commitment that he carried with him throughout his years.

As a father, Bill supported his children and family whenever they needed him—whether they asked for help or not. He was a constant presence in the lives of his children, grandchildren, and anyone else who needed him. His love was shown not only through his words, but through everything he did.

Bill spent many years coaching his daughters in softball and later became a beloved umpire in the community, where he was affectionately known as “Uncle Billy.” He gave his time, encouragement, leaving behind memories that will be cherished for years to come.

As his family grew, so did Bill’s love and support. He proudly showed up for his grandchildren at every opportunity—whether they were playing softball, soccer, baseball, basketball, or football, dancing at the Del Mar Fair, or participating in any other event. He was there cheering them on. His presence, encouragement, and unwavering support were felt by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Bill’s greatest joy was his family. He loved watching them grow, celebrating their accomplishments, and simply being there for the moments that mattered. His love and devotion created a lasting legacy that will continue through the generations.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Gloria Cayton; his son, James Cayton and daughter-in-law Marie Cayton; and his daughters, Cindy Russo and son-in-law Steve Russo; Kim Cayton and son-in-law Salvatore Martorana; and Dawn Ortega and son-in-law Jose Ortega.

He leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Tawnie and Taylor Russo; Christopher and Brittany Maples; Emma Cayton; and Natalie, Brianna, and Jacob Ortega.

He is also survived by his beloved great-grandchildren, Kennedy and Shane Russo; and Viviana, Kai, and Nico Maples, whom he loved dearly.

Bill is survived by his brother, Robert Cayton, and sister, Kelly Cayton, as well as many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Vivian Cayton and Howard Cayton, and his siblings, Michael Herth, David Cayton, Douglas Cayton, and Patrick Cayton.

Bill will be deeply missed, but his love, strength, laughter, and unwavering support will live on in the hearts of his family and all those fortunate enough to have known him. His greatest legacy is the family he loved so deeply.
