July 29, 1942 – October 23, 2026
James Lee Bennett, 84, passed away on October 23, 2026.
James was born on July 29, 1942, in Van Buren, Arkansas, and grew up with his two sisters, whom he dearly loved and with whom he shared a close and lasting bond throughout their lives. In 1952, his family relocated to San Diego after his father joined the military. James would make San Diego his home for the remainder of his life.
James met his beloved wife, Margaret, at Sweetwater High School. They married at a young age, beginning a life together that would ultimately include 50 years of marriage. James was deeply devoted to Margaret and to the family they built together. After retirement, James and Margaret enjoyed traveling throughout the United States in their motorhome, seeing the country together and creating many wonderful memories along the way.
James had a long and successful career with Rohr Industries, where he worked for 35 years. Through his hard work and dedication, he rose to become Director of Tooling, the position he held when he retired.
While James was proud of his career, his greatest source of pride was always his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. In retirement, he especially treasured the time he was able to spend with his grandchildren, who lovingly knew him as “Papa.” Whether traveling, gathering with family, or simply spending time together, being surrounded by the people he loved was where James was happiest.
James was known for his positive outlook, easy going demeanor, and ability to enjoy life. Even when things weren’t going particularly well, if someone asked how he was doing, his answer was almost always the same: “Great.” He also had a playful side and was known to be a bit of a prankster, occasionally pulling a practical joke on an unsuspecting family member or friend. His optimism, sense of humor, and genuine enjoyment of those around him were defining parts of who he was.
James is survived by his loving wife, Margaret; his three children, Dawn, Tracy, and Jim; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
James leaves behind a family who will deeply miss his steady presence, his humor, optimism, and the tremendous pride and love he had for them. To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he will always be remembered simply and lovingly as “Papa”
