April 12, 1941 – February 12, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Calvin Blackwood, born April 12, 1941, in San Diego, CA. John passed away peacefully on February 12, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to his family, friends, and community.
John was a proud member of the first graduating class of Birney Elementary School. He went on to attend Hoover High School and was also part of the first graduating class of Crawford High School in 1959. He later attended San Diego State University, remaining a proud alumnus throughout his life.
Growing up surrounded by cousins and extended family whom he cherished dearly, John developed the strong family values that guided him throughout his life. He carried that love forward as a devoted father to his three children and as a proud and playful grandfather affectionately known as “Uncle Grandpa.”
John spent many years working alongside his father, Elmer Blackwood, in the family car business. He took great pride in continuing the work his father began. In his later years, he dedicated 31 years to operating his auto donation program, You Auto Donate, generously supporting animal rescue organizations — a cause close to his heart.
John shared a loving partnership with his late life partner, Cherie. In their early years together, they loved traveling to Mexico and created countless memories on the open road. They shared a deep love for road trips, time spent with their families, and their beloved fur babies. Their adventures, shared hobbies, and companionship brought John great joy.
An outdoorsman at heart, John grew up fishing and hunting, often referring to the wilderness as “God’s country.” Whether casting a line, sharing stories, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature, he felt most at peace in the outdoors.
John will be remembered as a gifted storyteller, a loyal friend, and truly the life of every party. With his positive spirit and fun-loving personality, he could strike up a conversation with anyone. His warmth, humor, and genuine interest in others left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
His family will forever cherish memories of family vacations, singing along to their favorite country music, and the laughter he brought into everyday moments. Above all, he will be remembered as the best dad his children could have ever asked for.
John is survived by his daughters, Darci Pani and Dana Blackwood; his son, Darek Blackwood; and his five grandchildren, Eliana Pani, Carlo Pani, Andres Pani, Stella Blackwood, and Klayton Blackwood.
John’s legacy of generosity, joy, and deep love for his family will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
