John E. Roberts, 88, of El Cajon, passed away peacefully on Monday afternoon in the company of family at Zion Kaiser Permanente Hospital in San Diego. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He was one of six children born in the family home in Frackville, PA, on February 5, 1928, to the late William Roberts and Pearl Mae (Israel) Roberts.
He was enlisted in the U.S. Army from March 5, 1946 until his retirement on July 1, 1966. He honorably served during the Korean War.
After the military, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service, and later as an orderly assisting the elderly until he fully retired in 1996.
He was a member of the Sonrise Church in Santee attending services and senior bible studies when his health permitted. He loved baseball and other sports, walking his dog, and doing crossword puzzles.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 21 years, Marianna, in December 1999. He also was preceded in death by four siblings: William, Jr., James, Mildred, and Dorothy of Frackville, PA.
He is survived by his three daughters and their husbands: Lily Roberts and Robert Bakke in Davis, CA; Rebecca and Michael Drew in Apple Valley, CA; and Karen and David Main in Forest Ranch, CA.
He has seven grandchildren: Ericka, Jason, Jessica, Christopher, Clifford, Lindsay, and Zachary. He has five great-grandchildren: Noah, Michael Jr., Jackson, Maxwell, and Roman.
John is also survived by his older sister, Margaret Roberts, who lives in Frackville, PA, with their niece and her family.
He will be interred with his wife Marianna at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego. El Cajon Mortuary is handling arrangements.
The memorial service including military honors will be held at, 1:30pm on Friday, July 15, 2016, at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, CA
