Louis M. Bonomi passed peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Sunday, October 28, 2018 in his home in Bonita, CA. Louis is proceeded in death by his wife, Janis Mae, his daughter Cherri Ann Cline and his son Louis M. Bonomi, Jr. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, John and Marie Bonomi, son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Joanna Bonomi, grandson, Sean Wolfe and his wife Kymm and grandson Brad Wolfe and his wife Caroline, two grandchildren, and three step grandchildren.
Louis was raised in, what was then, the small town of Southington Connecticut. He was one of 11 children. He left Southington to join the U.S. Navy at age 18 and was followed by his childhood best friend and sweetheart, Janis Cotter. He and Janis both fell in love with California, and chose to establish their family in San Diego, where he was a resident for 72 years. An honorably discharged, World War II veteran, who served on the U.S.S. Walker, Louis was very proud of his service to his country.
After leaving the U.S. Navy, he became a painter by trade. He was a much sought-after, highly-skilled tradesman who was very proud of the fact that he was often in demand, leading large crews on various projects throughout Southern California. He would often point out buildings or projects he worked on in San Diego.
Proud of his Italian heritage and an avid golfer, he was a long-time member of the Italian American Golf Association (IAGA). He loved golf and the friends he made over the years as a member of the IAGA. Golfing with his friends and his son brought him great joy. He often spoke about games and tournaments in which he and Mark played.
Typical of the era, Louis had a strong character, and held his cards close to his chest. It could be said, he was not an overly demonstrative person. However, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved his family and friends fiercely. He was proud of his career, military service and the life he lead, but he spoke with the most pride about the family he created.
Louis will be interred with military honors at the Miramar National Cemetery on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at 10:30 AM. Family and friends are welcome to gather at his residence in Bonita directly after for a celebration of life reception. Anyone needing directions can contact Sean Wolfe at [email protected].
