His service included distinguished deployments during the Vietnam War and the Gulf War, where he demonstrated remarkable courage and resilience as an Independent Duty Corpsman. Throughout his naval career, he achieved the esteemed rank of Command Master Chief, a position that not only underscored his leadership skills but also reflected his unwavering commitment to his country. In addition to his duties at sea, Michael completed Hospital Corpsman and Pharmacy Technician School, soon after, served as an instructor at the Hospital Corps School, earning the affectionate nickname "Froggy" from his students. Over the years, this nickname inspired a tradition, leading to a collection of frog trinkets gifted to him by his students and fellow servicemen.
Michael's met the love of his life, Elaine, during their time working together in the hospital cafeteria. Their mutual admiration quickly transformed into a deep, abiding love, and they exchanged wedding vows on September 7, 1968. Their partnership thrived for an incredible 57 years, during which they nurtured a warm and loving family environment. Together, they welcomed three wonderful children: Rick, Sandy, and Jenny, who became the center of their world.
In addition to his family life, Michael was an active member of the Fleet Reserve Association and the American Legion, organizations through which he connected with fellow veterans and shared in their camaraderie. However, his greatest source of pride was his eight grandsons, with whom he formed unbreakable bonds. Michael's love for fishing and camping was a cornerstone of their relationship; he often took them on weekend adventures, sharing his passion for nature and the great outdoors. As their life coach and Little League coach, he inspired and guided them through their formative years, always encouraging them to pursue their dreams and embrace challenges.
In recent years, Michael was also blessed to embrace the role of a great-grandfather to four beautiful great-grandchildren, with a set of twins eagerly anticipated by the family. These relationships brought him immense joy and fulfillment, and he cherished every moment spent with his family.
