Raymond Don Mounts, beloved husband, father, dedicated educator, and championship coach, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2026, at the age of 77. Born on June 4, 1949, in Long Beach, California, Raymond lived a life defined by service, athletics, faith, and a profound dedication to shaping the lives of young people.
After high school, Ray answered the call to duty when he was drafted into the U.S. Army, honorably serving two years enlisted. Upon returning to civilian life, he pursued his passion for sports and education, playing football at Southwestern College before transferring to San Diego State University (SDSU). Ray channeled his love for language and leadership into a distinguished career as a high school English teacher and coach, leaving a lasting impact at every stop. He began his educator journey at Mountain Empire High School, where he taught English and coached football and wrestling. He later moved to Helix High School, teaching English and coaching cross country and track, most notably leading the team to a 2003 California CIF Championship in track alongside future NFL star Reggie Bush. Ray concluded his impactful career at Valhalla High School, where he taught English and continued his passion for coaching track.
An avid athlete and craftsman throughout his life, he loved running marathons, road cycling, woodworking, and tackling any challenge that required general problem-solving. He was also a deeply faithful man who dedicated much of his time serving his church community.
Ray is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Jo Mounts; his son, Shelby Mounts; his daughter, Jolie Brent; and his seven cherished grandchildren.
