Born in San Diego on December 1, 1951, to David and Joann (Horn) Martin, he graduated from Santana High School in 1970 and received his General Engineering Contractor’s License from the State of California in 1978.
Bill is survived by the love of his life, Linda (Vikander) Martin, whom he fell in love with in October of 1970. After an almost 3 year courtship, he and Linda married on November 18, 1972. So in love, Linda would sign her name “Mrs. William David Martin” for the many years following their joyous nuptials.
Bill was an amazing father and grandfather too and is survived by his four children: Stacie Bryan, Kellie Moore, Kevin Martin, and Breanne Martin. “Papa” is also survived by his four cherished grandchildren: Savannah Bryan, Dillan Bryan, Grace Moore, and Faith Moore.
Bill’s greatest joy in his life were his children and grandchildren. Never one to sit and rest, Bill would most often be found playing with them as if he was also a kid, and he will always be remembered as the biggest “kid” on the playground.
Bill was always quick to share a joke and always had a smile on his face. He would help anyone in need, often bringing food and drinks to his job sites to share. He was so loved in the community that he was often known as “Uncle Billy” to those he worked with. He loved everyone unconditionally and never met a person who didn’t instantly like him. Bill also exemplified and taught others what a true work ethic was. So many of the children who knew and loved him have recounted that Bill is the one who taught them what it meant to work hard and provide for one's family. It has often been said that Bill has the heart of a child and the strength of an ox.
Bill’s tremendously strong work ethic helped Dave Martin Supplies rise to one of the top materials and trucking businesses in San Diego during the peak of its history. Bill processed and mined millions of tons of aggregate material at Dave Martin Supplies where he also focused on producing specialized topsoil mixes, running heavy equipment, equipment procurement, as well as numerous contracting and grading projects. No one was better at production loading than Bill.
After his time at Dave Martin Supplies, Bill completed many major projects including the Big Bear Lake Marina and the Hotel Del Coronado Sea Wall. There was no job too big or too little for him, and his sea wall engineering skills saved many homes and restaurants during the El Nino years. Bill was also one of the original owners of B & B Heavy Equipment, which he started with his close friend and brother-in-law Bob Wheelington in 1977.
Bill is also survived by his seven sisters and brothers: Susan Greenberg, Linda Noyas, Robert Martin, Daniel Martin, Jeannie Malone, Nancy Belitz, and Anthony Mazzone. Bill will be missed by all, especially his much-loved nieces and nephews as well as his step-parents who have always loved him like a son, Carolyn Slatton and Richard Mazzone.
Although Bill's family and friends miss him dearly, they take comfort in knowing they will see him again in Heaven.
The celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Saturday, July 25, at 1 p.m., at Christ Lutheran Church, 7929 La Mesa Blvd., La Mesa, California 91942 with a reception immediately following at the same location.
