He was born on February 25, 1932, in Emerson, Arkansas, to Rev. Theron Murphy and Vera Natalie (Reaves) Smith. As a youth, he became fascinated with electronics and taught himself how to build and repair radio equipment. In 1950, he graduated from DeQueen High School, became a husband, and moved to El Dorado with little more than the change in his pockets to work as a technician for Radio Service Company. His talent for electronics and drive to help others earned him partnership status in only four years, and in 1976, he acquired full ownership. His three sons joined him, and it became a family enterprise, eventually expanding to include RSC Home Center, RSC Telecom, Electronic Alarm Co., Best Value Rental, Easy Auto, and many other endeavors. He retired in 2010, but he never stopped working.
Nor did he stop having fun. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, fishing, traveling, working with his hands, and anything with wheels. Always smiling and laughing, he never ran short on corny jokes and had a vast collection of gag gifts and novelties. He loved his family more than anything, and he looked forward to Monday morning coffee with his friends each week.
A devoted follower of Christ and a longtime member of East Main Baptist Church, his Faith and Love for God were the foundation of the life he built and continue to inspire all whose lives he touched.
He went by many names—David, Mr. Smith, Dad, Peepaw—but he was known and will be remembered by all for his love, kindness, generosity, humility, and quiet strength.
Preceding him in death, along with his parents, are his wife, Joanna Smith; a son, Danny Joe Smith; and brothers, Johnny D. Smith, Theron Orville Smith, and Loyce Otto Smith.
Survivors include his sons W. David Smith (Reha) and Kenny Smith (Gayle); grandchildren Kevin Smith (Niki), Courtney Mills (Tracy), Kris Smith (Gina), Sarah Smith-Tucker (Justin), Jake Smith (Caitlan), Josh Collins (Lynsey) and Justin Collins (Jesica); as well as 19 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Lou Gantz.
His family will hold a visitation at Young's Funeral Home on Sunday, October 29, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be officiated by Rev. Allen Grimmett the following day at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel, with interment at Arlington Memorial Cemetery to follow.
Memorials may be made to East Main Baptist Church, 1903 East Main Street, El Dorado, AR 71730.
