Don served in the U.S. Army before returning home to finish his education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and a Master of Business Administration and was licensed as a Professional Engineer in the state of Alabama.
Throughout his life, Don enjoyed watching most sports, whether live or on television—especially the Auburn Tigers and UAB Blazers. He often worked in his yard and was always on the go.
Those who knew Don will remember him as patient, playful, and always an educator at heart. He will be remembered for his kindness, humor, and dedication to family.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 25 years, Penny Freeman Chastain, his parents, and sister Mary E. Coshatt.
He is survived by his children Paige Thomasino (Scott) of Alabaster, AL; Stacey Morris (Wayne) of El Dorado, AR; Chris Frisby (Cindi) of El Dorado, AR; Deborah Conway of Huntsville, AL; and by his brother Ben Chastain of Birmingham, AL; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren who lovingly knew him as “Papa Don.”
Special thanks to the staff of Dylan's Homecare, LLC, and Rays of Joy Home Care, LLC, for not only being sitters but also treating Don like family, offering comfort and care.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 23, 2025 at Smyrna Cemetery with Mark Sullivan officiating. A burial will immediately follow under the direction of Young's Funeral Directors.
