Mrs. Johnson taught in El Dorado Public School system for 24 years and one year at Stephens. She received a BME at Henderson University and a MME at University of Arkansas. She was a member of AEA, NEA, Delta Kappa Gamma Society Alpha Phi Chapter, Alpha Chi and Kappa Delta Phi. She was also a charter member of Maple Avenue Baptist Church and was the Minister of Music at Trinity Baptist for 35 years. She was the Accompanist for Prime Timers and a member of First Baptist Church and Hattie Matheny Sunday School class.
She is more commonly known as “Mrs. J” by her students, who span several generations. Mrs. Johnson loved music and loved teaching her students. Students from her first years of teaching can still sing the Fifty Nifty United States, Elephant Walk, and Bunny Hop from memory and, of course, CALL THOSE HOGS. For the past several years Mrs. Johnson spent time each week with four year olds at First Baptist pre-school teaching some of her student’s children the same songs. She will be remembered for her joy in teaching, her kindness in giving, and her genuinely happy attitude she always carried. Mrs. J loved each and everyone one of her students and colleagues. Several people have attributed their profession in teaching and music to her influence. It is no doubt that she touched the lives of her students and changed the lives of many. You may read or post comments about Mrs. J on the Murmil Heights Elementary Facebook page.
