Smackover has lost a beautiful witness of Christianity and great faith, but Heaven has gained a glorious angel. Elo Ann Hopkins went to be with her Savior on March 22, 2012 at the John Williamson Hospice House in El Dorado, Arkansas. Born on June 16, 1932 in Vivian, Louisiana, she was the daughter of Dewey G. Tate, Sr. and Cynthia Tate Dees.
Mrs. Hopkins was a dedicated employee of Smackover Insurance Agency in Smackover, Arkansas for 60 years. Her impeccable work ethic and knowledge of insurance was recognized by all who knew her and her customers, whom she dearly loved.
She attended Cornerstone Church in Smackover, Arkansas and was a member of First Assembly of God, also in Smackover for over 60 years.
Mrs. Hopkins was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Donald R. Hopkins, Sr.; three sisters, Lucille Tate, Mary Alice Whittington, and Lois Stanek; and one brother, Dewey Tate, Jr.
She is survived by one daughter, Penny Hopkins Chanler and her husband Pat, and one son, Dondi Hopkins, two grandchildren, Tate and Kelsey Chanler; and two step-grandsons, Andy Chanler and Bryon Johnson.
She is also survived by two nephews, Richard (Regina) Whittington and Ted (Anita) Whittington; a niece, Linda Sharp; two brother-in-laws, John Stanek and Rev. Howard Whittington, several other nieces and nephews, and a special caretaker, Jean Tatum.
Ms. Ann, as she was fondly called, will also be greatly missed by Brad and Lacy Newman, Tyler (Trisha) Rogers, Tanner Rogers, Mary-Christa Rogers, Meg Rogers, and Elle Rogers, who all loved her dearly and considered her to be their surrogate mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
A celebration of Mrs. Hopkins life will be held at Cornerstone Church in Smackover, Arkansas on Monday, March 25 at 2:00 p.m. A graveside service will immediately follow at Smackover Cemetery. Visitation will be at Young’s Funeral Home on Sunday, March 24 from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m.
