He was a Vietnam veteran and was proud to have served his country. Gary received several medals of honor, including National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Services Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal & Marksmanship (rifle) Medal.
In the past few years as his health was declining you could see him and sometimes Pat, his wife, riding the country roads on his Kawasaki Mule enjoying the outdoors and his hobby of collecting aluminum cans and any other treasures he could find. Earlier in his life, he was a hard worker and a very skilled heavy machinery operator. He taught his son to drive and operate machinery at the age of eight.
Gary enjoyed spending time with his son on the internet searching for antiques. He had a large collection of antique gum ball machines. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandsons and his other constant companion, his little Yorkie, “Baby Girl”. Every doctor’s appointment he had in El Dorado was followed by a stop at Kentucky Fried Chicken, his favorite place to eat.
In the past he enjoyed singing solos. He was a member of Huttig Assembly of God, where he attended as his health permitted.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James F. and Ophelia DeShazo.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Martin DeShazo of Huttig; one son, Coby DeShazo of Huttig; one brother, Jackie DeShazo of Hot Springs; one sister, Sheila McMan (Larry) of El Dorado; and two grandsons, Brennen DeShazo and Daylin DeShazo.
He will be truly missed by his family.
Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Huttig Assembly of God.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 12, at Huttig Assembly of God with Rev. Duane Amis officiating. Burial will follow in Harper Springs Cemetery under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors.
