Alton served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Following his time in the military he worked as a barber in El Dorado for 39 years. He married Dorothy Fay Garrett in 1946. He was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church where he served on the stewardship committee, and he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and all sports.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and four sisters.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Fay Garrett Avery, sons; Joe Avery and wife, Marilyn of El Dorado, Glen Avery and wife, Elizabeth of Silsbee, TX, Alan Avery of El Dorado, and Ted Avery and wife, Rose of White Hall, AR; grandchildren; Shane Avery, Jason Avery of Silsbee, TX, Jeff Avery of El Dorado, Jessica Dumas of El Dorado, Amber Avery and Rachel Avery of White Hall, AR; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marie Cromer.
Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 22, at Young’s.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 23, at St. Mark United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Proctor officiating. Burial will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors.
Family will be at the home of Joe Avery.
