Peter James Carroll

November 3, 1931October 5, 2021

Dr. Pete Carroll, 89, of El Dorado, Arkansas, passed away on October 5, 2021. He played many roles in his life as a mentor to those in the medical profession in addition to his friends and the shepherd of his family. His loss will be felt by many.

He attended Louisiana Tech and the Louisiana State School of Medicine New Orleans. He did his residency in Nashville, Tennessee and heard many classic country artists play at the Ryman and the Opry. He was certified in Family Medicine. He could have chosen a more lucrative specialty but he only wanted to tend to folks in rural communities.

He served in the United States Air Force from 1957-1959, then went into practice in Bernice, Louisiana from 1959 until 1972. After moving to El Dorado and opening his practice he also served as AHEC South El Dorado residency director 1989-1999. After returning to AHEC he practiced until his retirement in 2019 after over 60 years as a doctor.

He is survived by his wife Suzanne, children Tammy Carroll Miller (Phil) and Judge Robin Carroll, bonus daughter Leslie Carroll, grandchildren Austin (Natalie), Morgan (Dakota), Pete (Holland) and Jessica and a great-granddaughter, Allie Carroll. Also many relatives in both the Carroll and Copeland families.

He is predeceased by his parents Charles and Julia, and his son Jeff. He was the last of his other five siblings. Also his beloved Scottish Terrier, Sarge.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to the caregivers: Earlene Watts, Charles Davis, Joanna Hill, Mary Jane Gregory and all the doctors and staff at MCSA.

Dr. Carroll came from a lineage of Carrolls who were committed to racial justice in the rural South. After integrating the waiting room in the hospital in Bernice he had a cross burned in his yard. He tended to all patients regardless of race or ability to pay.

His service will be this Friday at 11 am at the First Presbyterian Church of El Dorado. Per church policy masks are required. Memorials may be made to the church or the UAMS Peter J. Carroll Scholarship Fund.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at for the Carroll family.

My heart is saddened to learn that such an amazing man is no longer with us. There’s not enough space to share how dear he was to me as my doctor, who truly made me feel like a friend. He was a blessing to our community, and his legacy is great. I pray that the peace of God carries the family through the days of grief.

Dr. Carol deliver our daughter on March 1973. We were blessed to have him as our family doctor as well. In recent years we have reconnected with his daughter Tammy.

I’ve known of Dr Carroll all my life. He cared for my grandparents even after his practice became more maternity focused. I moved off and my neighbor in Grady told me Dr Carroll and Dr Reeves saved her husband’s life when he had his first heart attack while camping near Bernice many years ago.
After becoming a nurse I had the privilege of scrubbing many C-Sections with him. Even at 3 am he was ALWAYS pleasant and polite. Once he learned your name, he never passed you in the hallway without speaking to you, he would often enquire about my mom and how were my sisters doing(he delivered both of them).
They don’t make doctors like Pete Carroll anymore and I think the medical field is a tad dimmer without him keeping us all straight. My condolences to everyone that knew and loved him

I am truly saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Carroll. Words cannot begin to express the gratitude I have for him as an educator of doctors. He never met a stranger and I was always impressed that he knew every person in the hospital no matter of position by name! He exuded professionalism, intelligence and wisdom. He was always willing to teach and give advice and treated EVERYONE with compassion and respect. My sympathies to Ms. Susie and the entire Carroll Family. He will be missed.

Pete was my teacher, boss, friend, mentor and role model. He delivered 2 of my children. His knowledge and cheerful attitude was a comfort to my wife, Debbie. He gave his time and anonymous gifts to those in need. He is the reason we made El Dorado and Union County our home. I have never known a finer man.

Dr Pete was second, only to my dad, for most respected man in my life. I worked at AHEC for 11 years with him. He had such a loving spirit. Every morning he would come in and greet me with a big hug, if I wasn't in my office or didn't get my hug by 9AM, I would go down the hallway and find him. Miss Susie, you and the rest of the family are in my prayers. I thank God for being able to know and love Dr Pete , aka Pistol. God bless and keep you all.

Uncle Pete was a wonderful man. He was kind, generous, thoughtful, and funny. He also was a scholar and a great piano player. I was lucky to be able to claim him as my uncle.

Dr Carroll delivered both of my children. I had lots of problems carrying my daughter but he was always encouraging me and his wife also did. He will be greatly missed. Prayers for the family
