Born January 5,1936 in Lamesa, Texas, Ray entered the US Army right after he graduated from high school. After his discharge from the service, he worked for many years in trucking and farming before he began his career as a gas wells operator with Phillips Petroleum. Although he retired after 20 years with Phillips, Ray never stopped working. He was an expert at fixing things, whether they needed it or not, and there wasn’t a gadget or gizmo that he couldn’t figure out how to make or repair. If he needed a tool in his workshop, he made sure he had at least three of them- and gave away at least one of them to someone who he thought needed it more. An avid fisherman, Ray’s little slice of heaven for 25 years was his trailer on Lake Greeson.
Ray took great pride in working hard on his home and property, and when his work was done, he would venture out to help a neighbor or someone in need do the same for their own home. He loved serving his church family, Home Fellowship, by doing light maintenance and making sure the church was clean, neat, and well stocked with supplies each week. Ray didn’t just respond to requests for help from his friends and neighbors- he actively looked for opportunities to be of service and quietly did so.
In 1993, Ray was introduced to the love of his life, Pricilla, when she visited family in west Texas. After five years of back-and-forth, long-distance romance, he moved to Norphlet in 1998 and seamlessly became a member of the community. He made friends everywhere he went and knew the names of the clerk at the gas station and the servers at his favorite restaurants as well as he knew his own. Ray had a quick, dry sense of humor and if he teased you or played practical jokes on you, it was proof positive that he loved you. Despite his easy acclimation to life in south Arkansas, he remained a Texan through and through, with a marshmallow heart wrapped in barbed wire. He was generous, funny, loyal, hardworking, and smart, and he is deeply missed.
Visitation will be held Monday, February 10, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Young's Funeral Home in El Dorado, AR. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, February 11, 2025, in Young's Chapel, with Tee Raynes officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a donation in Ray’s memory to Home Fellowship, PO Box 10399, El Dorado, AR 71730.
