Bert was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He left this world peacefully on February 22,2022 in Chaparral, New Mexico surrounded by family. After losing his 3-year battle with cancer which truly showed his courage for life.
Bert was born on December 28, 1931 in Sayre, PA to Mildred Johnston and Adelbert Vanderpool. Finishing high school, Bert joined the Army on February 24, 1955. On September 19, 1958 he married Frances M. Rifenbury. Together they had two children Debra and Bert. During his military career he traveled all over the United States, to include 2 tours in Germany and 1 Tour in Vietnam.
Bert’s military awards in the U.S.Army were The National Defense Medal (NDSM), Vietnam Service Medal (VSM) (RVNCM), 7 awards of the Good Conduct Medal (GCMDL) , Army Accommodation Medal (ARCOM) , 6 overseas service stripes, Driver and Mechanic Badge. Bert retired from the U. S. Army on December 18, 1979 after 24 years of service.
Bert’s hobbies and interests were fishing, rock collecting in Herkimer, NY and New Mexico, and coin collecting. He also loved playing Pinocle and chess. Bert loved telling jokes and interesting facts and at times would say something comical and the whole room would laugh.
Bert is survived by his wife Frances, daughter Debra (David) Cooper, son Bert (Wendy) Vanderpool, 9 grandchildren, and 12 greatgrandchildren. His wish was to be cremated and later buried with his wife Frances in El Paso, TX.
