Alice was born in Ft. Worth, Texas, the second child of a family of five children and the only daughter. Her parents were William Perry and Cassie Smith Stovall. Brothers were William, J.T., Don, and Harvey Stovall, all preceding her in death. She is survived by her brother-in-law, Harry Schulte (Dolores), and sister-in-law, Barbara Stephenson (Stanley), both of El Paso.
Alice was a little girl when the family relocated to El Paso, Texas. She grew up in a home behind the family business, Stovall Welding, in Ysleta, Texas. She attended Ysleta Grade and High Schools. Later in life, she took classes at the University of Texas at El Paso. Alice excelled in school, being named co-valedictorian of her grade school and salutatorian of her Ysleta High School graduating class. Recognizing the value of education, she always encouraged her children and grandchildren to attend college. Her years at Ysleta High School were not limited to academics. She excelled in track, playing basketball and tennis and dancing the jitterbug like it was going out of style. It did not, and soon she was the jitterbug champion of the school.
Alice married Charles Robert (Bob) Schulte on May 3, 1947 and they remained sweethearts to the very end. He recently preceded her in death. Alice is survived by three children and their spouses, Dr. Perry Kay Haley Brown and Paul, Charles Robert Schulte Jr. and Karina and Dr. Don Park Schulte and Sonia and many beautiful grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Alice worked for the Mountain States and Southwest Bell Telephone companies before becoming a stay- at-home mom. She was assigned to the accounting department and also served as president of the union. Management respected not only her strong work ethic and abilities, but also the way she represented her colleagues, always a fair advocate for others. Alice also served as the president of the Ysleta Junior Woman’s Club and the Ysleta Woman’s Club. She was active in the Ramona Elementary and Ysleta High School PTAs and was a Girl Scout leader. Alice organized and supported the March of Dimes campaign in El Paso. For her service to the community and to her family, she was named 1965-66 Mother of the Year for the Western District of Texas.
Borrowing from Elizabeth Barrett Browning, “Twas her thinking of others” that made them think of her. Alice was always at the bedsides of many family and friends during their days of need. She also enjoyed caring for her grandchildren and great grandchildren, taking advantage of the time to teach them her wise lessons of life. They adorningly called her Nanee and fondly remember her warm embraces and ever present kindness.
Up until the end of her time in this life, Alice thought of others and dismissed attention to herself. She was truly a selfless angel on earth. She has now joined her dear Bob in Heaven where they are dancing the jitterbug and rejoicing in the pure light of God, our Father. “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Matthew 25:21
