Alvina Gilliland, lovingly known to her family as Granny, passed away peacefully at the age of 98. She was born on June 28, 1927, in Fabens, Texas, the third child of Florencio Flores and Juana Bonilla. She was raised during the Great Depression in Tornillo, Texas, an experience that shaped her strength, compassion, and remarkable resilience throughout her long and beautiful life.
Granny lived a life defined by love, devotion, and unwavering faith. She was a devoted daughter, beloved wife, caring mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, embracing every role with pride and tenderness. Her heart was open to all, and her kindness and generosity touched everyone around her.
She was the proud mother of five sons: Garland Gilliland, Edward Gilliland, Bruce Gilliland, Richard Gilliland, and Donald Gilliland. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, each of whom carries a piece of her love and legacy within them.
Granny’s home was always a place of welcome. Her door was open to family, friends, neighbors, and anyone who needed a warm meal, a listening ear, or a safe place to rest. She loved being surrounded by her family and found joy in the simple moments of talking, laughing, and being together. She had a deep love for cooking and baking, filling her home with comforting meals and delicious treats.
Granny lived through nearly a century of extraordinary change, carrying with her stories of hardship, triumph, love, and faith. She generously shared her wisdom, always teaching through her actions, her quiet strength, and the example she set.
Above all, Granny was a woman of profound faith. She knew that families would be reunited again in God’s presence and gives her family peace today.
She will be remembered for her kindness, her gentle spirit, her sense of humor, her generosity, and her loving presence. Her absence leaves a deep and heartfelt void, but her legacy will forever guide the family she cherished so deeply.
