She was born in the Montoya Heights neighborhood of El Paso and was also a lifelong resident of the community. She worked at Roberts Elementary School for many years as a baker and retired in the 1970s. It was here that the neighborhood kids started calling her Mom. She was a mom to many and she loved and treated everyone as her own. She enjoyed watching her children play sports well into adulthood and she was loved by their teammates, too. Her love for her family and a strong belief in God gave her comfort during challenging times in her life. she always had her rosary nearby.
Anita was very active in her parish of San Francisco de Asis. She took great pride in knowing that she and her siblings had carried the stones needed to establish the building foundation of San Francisco de Asis, the church her father Tomas helped build. Every year she would ask family and friends for a donation to make breakfast for the Franciscans after they sang at the Feast of St. Francis mass. For many years, Anita worked the enchilada booth at the annual San Francisco Kermes.
