Our dear Anthony Park Garcia, 28, of El Paso, Texas, died June 14, 2021, after a short battle with COVID-19. He was born on New Year’s Day 1993 in El Paso, the second baby born in the city that day, to Veronica Garcia. He was a beautiful, brilliant light in this world and a kind, loyal friend.
Anthony graduated in the Top 10 of his class at Ysleta High School in 2011. He received scholarships from Oklahoma State, Baylor University, and the University of Texas at Austin, but ultimately chose to go into the Pre-Pharmacy Program at the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio. He later moved back to El Paso to be closer to family and became a skilled sales associate for JCPenney, T-Mobile, DirecTV, CarMax and Sunrun, where he prided himself on finding the best deals for his clients. He was so modest and humble, but so, so proud of his accomplishments. Though he didn’t study business or anything related to sales, retail sales was incredibly easy for him. His former co-workers have said many times what a joy he was to work with and that his work ethic was second to none. On many occasions, he was a top seller in the nation for his employers and beamed with pride as he told us about each honor. His co-workers said he became more than a co-worker and a friend, Anthony was like family, offering advice or a laugh when they needed it.
Anthony was a talented athlete, having lettered in football, wrestling, and track. He went to nationals two times for city track, was a regional track qualifier and a state qualifier in wrestling and won the district title in wrestling. His grandpa likes to mention that he wasn’t necessarily a natural at any sport, but he was good because he worked hard at everything he did.
He was fiercely loyal to those he loved, yet Anthony was competitive with his cousins – Angel, Dee, and Felipe – who grew up with him and were like his own siblings. And he was incredibly sweet like his cousins Steven and Tony. They were a band of brothers who inspired each other to always do better.
When Anthony was 12, he became a big brother to his sister Marissa, who was later followed by Ariana and Castiel. He was always gentle with and protective of his younger siblings. And he was never too cool to spend time with them, even when their interests were so vastly different than his.
He was a fan of online gaming and enjoyed Pokémon so much that he named his two cats, Jolt and Flare, after characters from the game. As a child, Anthony loved the Power Rangers and wrestling.
Anthony was lovable, nerdy, goofy, playful, and cool. He was innocent but enjoyed a good time with his friends. Anthony was a jovial spirit who loved spending time with his family and friends. In the spirit of good deals, Anthony loved a good buffet, often taking family and friends out to a good meal at any new buffets he discovered and was proud of his omelets that he made for his loved ones. Most important to Anthony was his family and friends. He loved spending time with both and enjoyed attending music festivals with his buddies. He often traveled with his friends to experience new things, like skiing in Colorado. He was a kind and loving sibling and a loyal friend. Anthony was always delighted by finding cool, useful gadgets to share with family and friends.
He loved attending music festivals with his friends and often happily made arrangements because he wanted to be surrounded by the people he trusted and loved and would do anything for them. And he wanted to protect them while they were having a good time.
He is deeply missed by all those who knew him and will always be incredibly loved. We will forever be inspired by his kind heart, his hard work and his deep curiosity for the world. Our angel Anthony has walked on ahead of us and even when we manage to pick up the pieces of our broken hearts, there will always be something missing.
