Charles M. Putnam passed away on October 30, 2014. He was 86 years old. He will be laid to rest at the Fort Bliss National Cemetery with full military honors. Services will be held at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in west El Paso before burial. Charles was a veteran of WWII where he served in the U.S. Merchant Marine in both Atlantic and Pacific Ocean areas. He was wounded in action when his ship was torpedoed by a German U-Boat in the North Atlantic. He subsequently transferred to the U.S. Army in the Italian Theatre and served in the elite 351st Infantry Regiment on the Trieste-Yugoslav border. In the mid-fifties Charles served in military intelligence with the Military Assistance and Advisory Group in Rome, Italy. He later retired in 1968 as an Air Defense Artillery First Sergeant. After retirement Charles worked as Chief of Field Site Training for the Tumpane Company in the Middle East for three years and upon his return to the United States completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice at UTEP. Charles taught Criminal Justice at the El Paso Community College for twelve years until his second retirement. He is survived by his wife Laura of 66 years, two sons Clarence Putnam of El Paso and George Putnam of Fort Worth, and four grandchildren: Christopher, George Anthony, David and Nuria. All who have followed in his footsteps serving in the United States Military. Charles M. Putnam was a patriot, soldier, mentor, adventurer and man of honor. He was a Christian and member in good standing of the American Warrior Class and the National Rifle Association, as well as a long time El Paso resident. He will be sorely missed.
