When we were little Uncle Daniel would scold us for stealing gummy bears from his room. He thought the kids were the culprits, eating all of his gummy bears but even the adults were sneaking from his stash, grandma, grandpa, my dad. He was always a kid at heart. 

We bonded over setting boundaries with my father, his brother. Torn between wanting to help and hurt from him reject our help time and time again. Even after not seeing each other for 15 years of, we couldn’t ignore our commonality. My dad had influenced us to both find a passion and love for  movies. Last year uncle Daniel had asked me to watch three films. One represented his father. One represented my father and one represented him. All had Clint Eastwood as the main actor. It was a little challenging to take Clint Eastwood performance seriously. But I understood what Uncle Daniel was saying in the end and was happy that I could still bond with another family member over movies. One of the last phone calls I had with him we joked about how much we both thought each other sounded like my dad. I think joking about it is the only way we could handle talking about it. It was painful and comforting to know that distance and time couldn’t snuff out our relations. I can’t thank him enough for reconnecting when he did with what time he had left.
