

Daniel John Balkovec passed away February 2nd, 2015 after a long battle with lung cancer. Dan is survived by his two children, Brian Daniel Balkovec and Deborah Balkovec-Bravo. His daughter -in-law Christi and son-in-law Carlos. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Carolyn, Bianca, JD, and Marisa. As well as his 5 sisters and 1 brother. And many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 24 years Maria Teresa "Terry" Balkovec. Dan was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in July of 1946. He was born the fourth child of John and Mary Balkovec. After completing high school, Dan was drafted into the U.S. Army. During his time in the military he served two tours in Vietnam, where he earned several medals; including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Bronze Star. Dan worked several years as a distributor for West Texas News and Coors Beer before returning to government service as a U.S. Customs Inspector and later an Officer with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Dan retired from CBP in 2012. Dan loved to do many things. He loved watching his Pittsburgh Steelers and cheering them on whenever they played. He loved games of chance, often taking trips to nearby casinos and Las Vegas as well as playing the lottery. Most of all he loved spending time with his family, near and far, but especially spending time with his grandchildren. Dan crossed many paths throughout his life and met many people. He was a protector of his family and of his country. He will be forever loved and remembered by all. Visitation will be at Crestview Funeral Home Thursday, February 5, 2015 from 5:00 PM. to 9:00 PM. with recitation of the Rosary to begin at 6:00 PM.
