Daniel Mellado was born on April 20, 1943 to Josephine Arias and Daniel Andres Mellado. On November 30, a short time after he received Last Rites from Fr. Bill Cobb of St. Clements Anglican Church, he departed his earthly body peacefully, in his sleep, surrounded by family and friends.
Daniel Mellado was a devoted father, a dedicated and much-loved teacher, and a gifted cellist. Prior to receiving his PhD in Music History, Theory, and Cello Performance from Michigan State University, he performed in the El Paso Symphony and taught in the El Paso Public School System. He went on to teach at Northern Michigan University, University of Colorado at Boulder, East Carolina University at Greenville North Carolina, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, and in Sao Paolo, Brazil. He performed as principal cellist and soloist of numerous symphony orchestras, played with the Shiras Quartet and toured the U.S. and Asia with the Arete Trio.
He is survived by Fairya, his wife of 55 years; the families of his two daughters Rachael and Nicole with their sons, Enzo, Jacob and Amon; and the families of his four siblings: Robert, Helen, Andrew, and Dionel.
His sister, Helen, finds a quote from David Harkins very apropos: “We smile because he lived.”
In lieu of flowers, Daniel would appreciate donations be directed to the charitable work of St. Vincent de Paul.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.hillcrestfhwest.com for the Mellado Jr. family.
