Delia Josefina Araiza Werthmann’s life was a beautiful story of love, faith, and generosity, and her memory will forever live in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her. Delia, age 95, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2026, in her home of 75 years. The daughter of Eduardo and Josefina (Islas) Araiza, Delia was born on March 22, 1931, in El Paso, TX. She was a graduate of El Paso High School.
On February 3, 1951, Delia married Henry Werthmann, beginning a partnership that lasted 51 years. Together they raised four independent daughters, spent time in Ruidoso, NM, fishing, hosting campfires filled with ghost stories and s’mores, and watching bears, deer, raccoons, and hummingbirds. Together they cheered the Dallas Cowboys to many victories, traveled to spend time with grandchildren, and shared many cups of coffee with their parents. Love and devotion defined their relationship.
Delia volunteered in many organizations which supported the schools and extracurricular activities in which her children were active. She was a member of the Ascarate Elementary School PTA for many years, serving as president and spearheading the “Helping Hand” initiative which focused on keeping children safe, the mobile library initiative, and teacher appreciation events. After leaving her mark at Ascarate, she served as President of the Texas State 15th District PTA. In 1978-1979, Delia was awarded the prestigious Ysleta ISD Friend of Education Award. Delia also served on the Board of Directors for Goodwill, headed a Girl Scout troop, and was a lifelong member of St. Pius X Catholic Church.
Delia was an avid reader. Some of her best days were when the Reader’s Digest Select Editions would arrive because she and her daughters would spend the entire afternoon outside reading under their beloved willow tree and enjoying banana popsicles! Delia loved learning; she was a whiz at crossword puzzles and loved to play Scrabble.
Delia loved being surrounded by family and friends. She always acknowledged people’s birthdays by calling them on their special day, often singing “Happy Birthday.” Delia and her husband, Henry, hosted a yearly 4th of July party and opened their home to foreign exchange students from Norway, Brazil, Chile, and Japan.
