DL McElroy, 92, of El Paso, left this world to be with the Lord on January 15, 2019. He was born on a farm north of Warren, Oklahoma to Dora Lee and Ada McElroy on January 25, 1927. Losing his father at the age of 12, DL quit school and began working to help support his mother and six sisters. As a young man, he left Oklahoma to work in Crystal City, Texas where he met the love of his life, Jewel Poteet. Married life began in Imperial, Nebraska where DL was the foreman for the construction of several large dams. In 1951, DL and Jewel moved to El Paso, Texas where they made this their home. Working for The Banes Company, DL set up Steelcon Building Company which he bought out and ran for over 40+ years.
DL was involved in farming and ranching. The Tree Well Ranch in the Dell City area was a valued part of raising his grandchildren. Involvement in the Southwestern International Livestock Show and Rodeo included being superintendent for the horse show department and Chief Executive Officer. DL was also an early member of the Ysleta Roughriders.
DL was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Jewel. He is survived by his son Delbert (Kick) and wife, Jayne, and children Wyndi Klement, Maegan Allen and Damon McElroy. Grandchildren Luke and Zach McElroy, Irene and Jaynie Allen and Jacob, Caitlin, and Marian Klement. Daughter, Pat Bradsher and husband Rick and children Steven and Matthew. Grandchild Ethan Worker. Daughter, Linda Carver, son Daryl McElroy. Daughter, Roberta McElroy, son Daniel Ames and Andrew McElroy. Grandchildren, Emily, Abagaile Ames and Devlin, Kaleigh McElroy. Daughter, Dorothy Skirha and children McKenzie and Mason Skirha.
Visitation will be from 10am-12pm on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Hillcrest Funeral Home, 1060 North Carolina Drive. Graveside service will be held at Evergreen East Cemetery on 12400 Montana Avenue at 1pm with procession leaving the funeral home at 12:15pm.
