Eliana "Ellie" Galdos

Eliana “Ellie” Galdos passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. She was born in Lima, Perú, she was the oldest of six children. She was the daughter of Dr. Mario and Violeta Galdos. She has been a resident of El Paso, Texas, for more than fifty years. She was a humble, loving, generous, attentive, respectful person, always willing to help and a great professional. Her kindness was unmatched. She had a unique ability to make the worst days beautiful and even magical. She took care of her parents, siblings, nieces and nephews. Her passion was exemplified by her commitment to her patients. She never married and dedicated her life to her vocation, caring for children and young cancer patients.

During her 40 years of professional life, her mission was always to bring joy to the sweet little souls undergoing treatment for their fight against cancer in the pediatric unit at Providence Memorial Hospital in El Paso, Texas. She never hesitated to spend her own money to buy toys and give them as gifts to make her patients happy. The trunk of her car was like a toy store. After her long working hours or on her days off, she would dedicate herself to her patients, she would visit them and check up on them. No matter the time of day, she was always available to answer the call of “her children.” She was often present to accompany them at the time of their last breath. She never expected anything in return. But her work and love for her children went further. She cared for and supported their families as well, she understood how difficult it was to see the little ones leave and she assisted their families even after cancer took their lives. Ellie was for many years the right hand of Dr. Jerry Swaney, Pediatric Oncologist. They formed the best “Pediatric Oncology Team” in El Paso, Texas. Her service was second to none. She had the great talent of placing intravenous lines in the smallest patients without causing as much pain or suffering. Her skill was widely recognized and she was called upon by other pediatricians to place them. She was an avid learner and was always at the forefront of the latest pediatric oncology procedures for the benefit of her patients. Ellie went on to hold the most certifications in Pediatric Oncology in the El Paso area.

For many years, Ellie attended Camp Courageous, a summer camp for children with cancer, sponsored by Candlelighters of El Paso in Ruidoso, New Mexico. She used her hospital vacation days to serve during this incredibly loving event. Many times, she became the only nurse available and was on call without hesitation 24 hours a day. She stated that “the best reward was the opportunity to protect my patients in their outdoor experiences.” Candlelighters publicly recognized her for her labor of love. She was ultimately honored with the Spirit of El Paso Award (known as the Community Spirit Award), in recognition of her loving nature, dedication and boundless efforts. But the best reward she had was the love of her patients and family.

She loved cooking and was an exceptional baker, she went out of her way to make each child feel very special with her beautifully decorated cakes that she customized for special occasions such as holidays, birthdays, or when a patient was given high. She was a devout Catholic and lived in her faith. Sundays were always very special to her and she never stopped giving to the church. She treasured praying her holy rosary and there was never a lack of masses that she ordered to be said for the souls of her parents and her beloved nephew Luisito. She also participated in several ministries of faith. She took part in the ACTS retreat to further strengthen her faith. Traveling was special for her. She enjoyed visiting numerous countries with her parents. She also made several trips with members of the Queen of Peace Catholic Church and among them Father Trini, who died years later. In addition, she was passionate about sports cars and she was lucky to always have an attractive one. Many of her co-workers joked calling her "the fastest nurse."

Ellie lived to gently support others. While she was respected professionally, she was also exemplary to her family and she remained particularly devoted to her parents until they both died five years apart. Sadly, Ellie retired from nursing due to her own diagnosis of cancer from which she was cured, followed by Alzheimer's disease until her passing. Despite her complications, her great heart and spirit never wavered.

She was preceded by her parents, Dr. Mario and Violeta Galdos, her sister Patricia Kanitz and her beloved nephew Luisito Galdos. She will always be remembered by her sister Rosana Bridgewater, (her husband Michael, her daughters Jennifer, Jessica and Julie), her brothers Mario Galdos Jr., (his wife Rosa, her son Mario Alejandro Galdos, his wife Stephany, her children, Darien, Triton and Atlas), Fernando Galdos and Alvaro Galdos, (his ex-wife Claudia, his son Francisco Galdos and his wife Sofía). Also, Patricia's husband, Tom Kanitz.

We would like to acknowledge the affection and support she received from the Nantz Alzheimer and Neuroimaging Center at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas, its director, Dr. Joseph C. Masdeu, MD, PhD, Research Coordinator, Andrea Franco Pando, and their staff, also to Desert Peaks Assisted Living & Memory Care of Las Cruces, New Mexico, its administrator, Jana Inkpen, LPN, its director, Lupe Valles, Director of Community Relations, Amanda López, assistants, Sarah Oliver, Kara Foreman, Nancy Linares, Sam Garde, others, their entire staff and finally to Gentiva Hospice of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Stacey Lopez, LPN, Lauren Metz, RN and Andrea Gousha, RN and their staff. Their support was invaluable and made the end of Ellie's life rewarding.

We would like to invite you to join us in honoring her life and memory on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at 11:30 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church located at 5750 Doniphan Dr., El Paso, Texas 79932. At a later date, Ellie's ashes will be placed in the mausoleum at Memory Gardens of the Valley Cemetery in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, near her parents.

Eliana “Ellie” Galdós falleció el miércoles 21 de febrero de 2024. Nació en Lima, Perú, fue la mayor de seis hermanos. Hija del Dr. Mario y Violeta Galdós. Residente de El Paso, Texas, desde hace más de cincuenta años. Era una persona humilde, cariñosa, generosa, atenta, respetuosa, siempre dispuesta a ayudar y una gran profesional. Su amabilidad fue inigualable. Tenía una habilidad única para hacer que los peores días fueran hermosos e incluso mágicos. Cuidó a sus padres, hermanos, sobrinas y sobrinos. Su pasión quedó ejemplificada por su compromiso con sus pacientes. Nunca se casó y dedicó su vida a su vocación, cuidar a niños y jóvenes pacientes con cáncer.

Durante sus 40 años de vida profesional, su misión siempre fue llevar alegría a las pequeñas y dulces almas que estaban en tratamiento de su lucha contra el cáncer en la unidad pediátrica del Hospital Providence Memorial de El Paso, Texas. Nunca vaciló en gastar su propio dinero para comprar juguetes y obsequiarlos y así lograr hacer felices a sus pacientes. El baúl de su automóvil parecía una juguetería. Después de sus largas horas de trabajo o en sus días libres, los dedicaba a sus pacientes, los visitaba y revisaba. No importaba la hora del día, ella siempre estaba disponible para atender al llamado de “sus niños”. Muchas veces estaba presente con ellos para acompañarlos a la hora de su último respiro. Nunca esperó nada a cambio. Pero su labor y amor hacia sus niños iba más allá. Cuidaba y apoyaba a sus familias, entendía lo difícil que era ver partir a los pequeños y asistía a sus familiares aún después de que el cáncer les arrebatara la vida. Ellie fue durante muchos años la mano derecha del Dr. Jerry Swaney, Oncólogo Pediátrico. Formaron el mejor “Equipo de Oncología Pediátrica” de El Paso, Texas. Su servicio fue insuperable. Tuvo el gran talento de colocar líneas intravenosas a los pacientes más pequeños sin causar tanto dolor o sufrimiento. Su destreza era ampliamente reconocida y era llamada por otros pediatras para colocarlas. Era una ávida aprendiz y siempre estuvo a la vanguardia de los últimos procedimientos de oncología pediátrica para el beneficio de sus pacientes. Ellie llegó a tener la mayor cantidad de certificaciones en Oncología Pediátrica en el área de El Paso.

Durante muchos años, Ellie asistió al Camp Courageous, un campamento de verano para niños con cáncer, patrocinado por Candlelighters of El Paso en Ruidoso, Nuevo México. Hacía uso de sus vacaciones del hospital para servir durante ese evento increíblemente amoroso. Afirmaba que “el mejor pago fue la oportunidad de proteger a mis pacientes en sus experiencias al aire libre”. Candlelighters la reconoció públicamente por su trabajo de amor. Finalmente fue honrada con el Premio Espíritu de El Paso (conocido como Premio Espíritu Comunitario), en reconocimiento a su naturaleza amorosa, dedicación y esfuerzos ilimitados. Pero la mejor recompensa que tuvo fue el amor de sus pacientes y familiares.

Le encantó la cocina y fue una repostera excepcional, hizo todo lo posible para que cada niño se sintiera muy especial con sus hermosos pasteles decorados que personalizó para ocasiones especiales como días festivos, cumpleaños, o cuando a un paciente era dado de alta. Fue una católica devota y vivió en su fe. Los domingos fueron siempre muy especiales para ella y nunca dejó de contribuir a la iglesia. Atesoraba rezar su santo rosario y nunca faltaron las misas que mandaba a decir por las almas de sus padres y su entrañado sobrino Luisito. Ella participó también a varios ministerios de fe. Fue parte del retiro de ACTS para aún más afianzar su fe. Viajar fue especial para ella. Disfrutó visitar numerosos países con sus padres. También hizo varios viajes con miembros de la Iglesia Católica Queen of Peace y entre ellos el Padre Trini, quien falleciera años después. Además, le apasionaban los autos deportivos y tuvo la suerte de tener siempre uno atractivo. Muchos compañeros de trabajo bromeaban llamándola "la enfermera más rápida".

Ellie vivió para apoyar dulcemente a los demás. Si bien la respetaban profesionalmente, también fue ejemplar con su familia y permaneció particularmente dedicada a sus padres hasta que ambos fallecieron con cinco años de diferencia. Lamentablemente, Ellie se retiró de la enfermería debido a su propio diagnóstico de cáncer del que fue curada, seguido de la enfermedad de Alzheimer hasta su fallecimiento. A pesar de sus complicaciones, su gran corazón y espíritu nunca flaquearon.

Le precedieron sus padres, el Dr. Mario y Violeta Galdos, su hermana Patricia Kanitz y su querido sobrino Luisito Galdos. Siempre será recordada por su hermana Rosana Bridgewater, (su esposo Michael, sus hijas Jennifer, Jessica y Julie), sus hermanos Mario Galdos Jr., (su esposa Rosa, su hijo Mario Alejandro Galdos, su esposa Stephany, sus hijos, Darien, Triton y Atlas), Fernando Galdos y Alvaro Galdos, (su ex esposa Claudia, su hijo Francisco Galdos y su esposa Sofía). Además, el esposo de Patricia, Tom Kanitz.
