My Mother came to this country in the 50s and spoke no english.  She learned to speak english from a southern man.  You could hear it in her verbage, "Well, I reckon ve gonna go to da house now".   Her husband served 23 years in the Army, 2 tours in Vietnam.   She had 7 children, 6 survived, her 5 boys all put on a uniform and served their country.   In our youth, it never occurred to us that the mere passing of a sedan in front of her house was cause for anxiety.  Perhaps somebody coming to tell her that one of her boys was in trouble.  She made 3 meals a day for her husband and children, we were never on welfare.  She learned to make enchiladas and had a ton of friends.  She was my example of womanhood that few have lived up to.  She is gone now but i carry her in my heart everyday.
