Our beloved father, George Tyler Dowe, was born in Montgomery, Alabama on August 28, 1932, to parents Daniel O’Connell Dowe and Irene Nation Dowe. George passed away December 7, 2023 at the age of 91. George attended Lanier High School in Montgomery and graduated from Auburn University in 1954 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Upon graduation, George served as an officer in the United States Army, and was stationed at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. It was in Arizona that George developed a deep appreciation for the desert southwest.
On August 11, 1962, George married the love of his life, Kathleen Dowe (Farrelly) in Amarillo, Texas, and started a family. In 1969, George made the decision to move his family to El Paso, Texas, embarking on a new venture, joining Gorman Engineering. As President of Gorman Engineering, he played a vital role in assisting the El Paso Electric Company, as well as many other companies throughout New Mexico and Arizona, in addressing their city’s electrical needs and subsequent growth.
George was the ultimate family man whose greatest pride was his 4 children, 8 grandchildren, and great-grandson. When not working, you would find him indulging in his favorite pastimes such as playing tennis or swimming with his children or tending to his yard – activities that allowed him moments of relaxation amidst life’s challenges. George was an avid fan of Auburn University and the Green Bay Packers. He served for many years, and is often remembered, as an usher for Queen of Peace Catholic Church. After retiring, George joined the El Paso County Master Gardener Organization in 1996, and devoted a significant amount of time, effort and hard work to building the tomato garden at the Texas A&M University Extension Center, which he immensely enjoyed. Beyond those interests, watching El Paso’s stunning sunsets from his backyard, and sharing his evening cheese, crackers and wine with whomever dropped by, brought him tremendous joy. Let’s not forget, though, George’s love for dessert, which he never passed up.
George is preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Dowe, son George Tyler Dowe Jr., parents Daniel O’Connell Dowe, and Irene Nation Dowe, brother Daniel Dowe and wife Barbara, brother Herbert Dowe, sisters Mary Dowe, Irene Diettrich and husband Roger, and brother-in-law Peter Farrelly. He is survived by his children, Anne Stevens (J. Monty), Patricia Gabbard, and Daniel Dowe (Joelle); his grandchildren Hannah Gabbard, Greyson Gabbard, Katie Meneses, Diego Meneses, Justin Stevens (Kaleigh), Jordan Stevens, Finn Dowe and Luke Dowe, and great grandson Elliot Montague Stevens. He is further survived by his sister-in-laws Elizabeth Farrelly, Connie Farrelly (Peter) and Miriam Dowe (Herbert), plus numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Juan Becerra for his compassionate care. The family would also like to thank the staff at the Legacy at Cimarron for their kindness and dedication throughout George’s almost 3-year residency. Donations may be made to Queen of Peace Catholic Church, or the Lee and Beulah Moor Children’s Home.
A rosary for George will be held on January 27, 2024, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church at 11:30 am, with a funeral mass following at noon. Reception to follow at the El Paso Country Club.
