Gilbert graduated from Ada High School in 1959 and attended the University of Oklahoma and the University of New Mexico, where he earned his degree in engineering in 1971. He received his Professional Engineer license in New Mexico in 1974
Growing up in small-town Oklahoma, Gilbert developed a deep appreciation for community and simplicity, values that stayed with him throughout his life.
Gilbert’s career took him to many places worldwide, including Taipei, Manila, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. He embraced many cultures and made lasting connections wherever he went. Throughout his career, he mentored many people and was deeply committed to excellence in all that he did.
Gilbert was also an avid reader who enjoyed playing classical guitar, listening to old-school jazz, and traditional country and western music, especially Willie Nelson. He loved his quiet time, enjoying the El Paso sunset with a good dog by his side.
A lifelong learner, Gilbert went back to college at the age of eighty-one to complete a master’s degree, a testament to his enduring curiosity and commitment to education.
He is survived by his sisters, Virginia Lee, and Christena Sue; his wife, Marcia; his daughter, Angie; his sons, Sean and Matthew; his granddaughter, Ruby; and a large extended family.

A visitation for Gilbert will be held Wednesday, August 28, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Martin Funeral Home West, 128 North Resler Drive, El Paso, TX 79912.
