Gloria June Johnson passed away peacefully at home in El Paso, Texas on November 27, 2023. She was 94. She was born in Northern California, heart of the redwoods, in the city of Eureka on September 9,1929. The daughter of George and Lillian Cross, sister of Jerry Cross, Gloria grew up surrounded by a close family community made up of many aunts, uncles, and cousins. After graduating from Eureka High School, she attended and graduated from Pasadena Business College. One summer while on a college break, Charles Johnson traveled to Eureka where he met the beautiful Gloria Cross at a church beach outing. This would be the beginning of a courtship and marriage that lasted over 71 years. After their graduations, Charles and Gloria began an amazing adventure throughout Latin America with a special focus on Mexico, ministering the gospel of Christ to those in need. This included Mexico City, Monterrey, Guatemala, and many of the remote villages and jungles of Veracruz. Charles and Gloria moved their family to El Paso in 1972, where they could easily travel across the El Paso/Juarez border into Mexico and where she continued to work and serve throughout her 94 years.
Gloria was a special woman of tremendous faith and prayer that was visibly reflected with her heart-felt calling to serve God and help others. She was especially drawn to help those with physical needs and ailments, always working to provide help with food, medicine, clothing, shelter, and financial needs. Gloria had a special place in her heart for babies, children and married couples struggling to have children. She was a prayer warrior and was blessed to witness many miracles in her lifetime. Nothing brought her greater joy than to spend time preparing and sharing a meal over the dinner table with her family and the many close friends she made over the years. Gloria loved to retell stories, usually accompanied by much laughter of her five children’s childhood and their unique experiences growing up in Mexico. Her grandchildren were especially close to her and truly cherish the time they spent with her.
In their 71 years of marriage, Charles and Gloria were blessed with 5 children, 17 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. Gloria is survived by:
Son Stephen’s wife (Suzy), children Christopher, Jeremy, Stephanie, Andrea and Grace
