Henry "Kiki" Abel Torres, a beloved husband and father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, left this world on July 21, 2023, surrounded by the love and memories of his family. Born on November 7, 1928, he lived a long, happy life filled with warmth, laughter, and kindness.
Henry's journey through life was marked by both joys and sorrows. He cherished his six children and their spouses: Dolores Romo, Patricia Saenz, Geraldine and Alfonso Garcia, and Gloria and Jesse Piña, but sadly had to say goodbye to two of his children, Fernando and Bertha Lorraine, at an early age. Despite these heartaches, he continued to hold his family close to his heart.
As a grandfather, Henry was a pillar of love and support to Gabe Saenz, Stephanie Piña, Mandy Heikkinen, Amber Garcia, Michael Saenz, Michael Romo, Sasha Piña, and Tony Piña. Their presence brought immense joy to his life, and he found great pride in watching them grow and succeed. The legacy of his love extended to his great-grandchildren, Meredith Saenz, Aria Heikkinen, Abel Heikkinen, Damian Macias, Lianna Macias, Matthew Muro, Ariana Rodriguez, and baby Romo, whom he adored.
Henry served his country with honor, demonstrating his selflessness and compassion as a medic during the Korean Conflict, holding the rank of Corporal while stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He was also a proud Bowie Bear alumni class of '46, and his school memories held a special place in his heart.
A man of deep faith, Henry was a devoted parishioner at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church. As a 4th degree Knight of Columbus he exemplified his commitment to his religious beliefs and his desire to serve.
Henry's life was a tapestry woven with love, family, and connections. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Josephine, fondly known as Josie, and his siblings Gonzalo, Antonio, Olivina, Gustavo, Edmundo, Raul and Jose. The bonds he shared with his numerous nephews, nieces, godchildren, and foster children were precious to him, and he nurtured these relationships with care and affection.
With his infectious laugh, heartwarming smile, and witty sense of humor, Henry could light up any room he entered. His warm greetings, always accompanied by a playful "Hey, don't worry, be happy," left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
In the company of Josie, Henry was a master of the Jitter-Bug, especially when they danced to Glen Miller's "In the Mood," their cherished wedding song. Henry and Josie could often be found playing the one armed bandits at a casino. Their love story was an inspiration to all who witnessed it.
Henry was known for his good-natured wisdom and had a playful answer for everything. To his grandkids, his secret to a long life was humorously attributed to drinking Busch beer rather than water, a favorite inside joke they will treasure forever.
Throughout his life, Henry cared deeply for his extended family, embracing the spouses of his grandchildren as his own. He welcomed Nick Macias, Nick Heikkinen, Lety Muro, and Brianna Silvas into the family with open arms and love. He even cared deeply for his children’s ex spouses Mike Romo and Arturo Saenz Jr.
Henry "Kiki" Abel Torres was a beacon of love and kindness, and he touched the hearts of everyone fortunate enough to have known him. As we bid farewell to this extraordinary man, we carry the memories of his laughter, his love, and his words of wisdom. May he rest in eternal peace, reunited with his beloved Josie and all those who went before him. His spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched, and his legacy will forever be cherished.
As he always said, 'Que Dios te cuide, te guille, te guarde, y te bendiga".
