

Preceded in death by parents Harry Wilson Proudfoot and Blanche Margaret Ream Proudfoot; first wife Mary Lou Gee Proudfoot Wedebrook (Portsmouth OH); second wife Billie Jean Wolf Proudfoot (El Paso); third wife Janie June Cole Proudfoot (El Paso); sisters Elizabeth Mae Proudfoot Cowen (El Paso), Louella Jean “June” Proudfoot Sarkis and Dorothy Marlene Proudfoot Daley Nuzacci (Pittsburgh); half-brothers Carl Harry Proudfoot and Ralph Wilson Proudfoot (Pittsburgh); stepson Mark (El Paso); and, daughter Sandra Kay Proudfoot (Portsmouth OH).
Survivors include daughters Mary Lou (Douglas) Proudfoot Kennedy (Punta Gorda, Florida); Karen Sue Duffy and Patty (James) Jean Tucker (El Paso); 7 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews to whom he was “Uncle Herc” (Hercules).
Young Herman worked in Pittsburg at Kroeger’s Grocery Store, Fort Pitt Hardware Company and Jones & Lockland Steele Mill.
In 1948 he joined the US. Army, serving 25 years as Military Police, as E7 Air Defense Technician with the 51st Signal Battalion, and in the Korean War. Service included Alaska; Arizona; California; China; CL-02 Bratenahl, NIKE as Chief FC Mechanic until assigned to Europe (1965); Germany; Hawaii; Japan; Kentucky; Maryland; New Mexico; Ohio; Okinawa; and Philippines. Received three U.S. Army Meritorious Citations, National Defense Service Medal, and seven U.S. Army Good Conduct Medals (Occupation of Europe and Japan).
Following military service, Herman worked in electronics for Civil Service.
He attended University of Maryland.
Certified by Texas Commission on Alcohol & Drugs and licensed by Texas Association of Alcohol & Drug Counselors as an Alcohol Counselor, Herman in 1979 was instrumental in opening El Paso’s first treatment center and worked as first Director of Lifemark Program of Southwestern General Hospital, in 1982 worked in Marketing & Intervention for Cottonwood Treatment Program, in 1985 became Alcohol & Drug Clinical Director at Hotel Dieu Hospital, and in 1987 served as Clinical Director of El Paso County Alcohol Drug Service.
He belonged to Unity El Paso Church, enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping (such s’mores!), reading, gardening (West Texas heat feat), cooking, palate-pleasing, and socializing. Herman made friends easily.
He was a friend of Bill W.’s since 1970.
Friday, November 26, 2021, visitation is 10am-1pm, and services 1-2pm at Funeraria Del Angel, 8817 Dyer Street, El Paso. Fort Bliss National Cemetery graveside services follow at 2pm.
