Hortencia R Ortega

Hortencia R. Ortega “Tencha” of El Paso TX lived a remarkable 99 years and passed away August 19, 2026. She was not only our mother, but also the last family member of the “Greatest Generation”. She was born May 1, 1927 in El Paso, TX to Geronimo and Luz Rivera. In 1940, she met Ramon Ortega. The two fell in love and married four years later. Married for 50 years, she had four children Anita, Ramon Jr., Teresa and Yolanda.

She was a dedicated mother and protector to her children. She worked as a meat-wrapper for Food Mart and Piggly Wiggly for over 15 years. Family was a top priority and inspired everyone around her with this value. She set an example of hard work, honesty and faith. She was parishioner of St. Joseph and St. Pius churches. She helped at voting polls, joined the Senior Citizens Center at Washington Park, and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary St. Joseph’s Catholic War Veterans. Her many hobbies included ceramics, sewing, knitting, Folklorico, gardening, and cake decorating. Her love for cooking and baking earned her the nickname “Grandma Cookie”from her family and friends. She always enjoyed singing and listening to Big Band and Mexican classics especially in her later years. Mom’s memory will forever be cherished. Her spirit will continue to inspire us all. In our hearts she lives on and we will forever honor the legacy of a remarkable woman.

Preceded in death by her parents, Geronimo and Luz Rivera; husband, Ramon C. Ortega; son, Ramon C. Ortega Jr.; siblings, Esther Godina and Carlos Rivera; and her close cousin, Juanita Mercado. She is survived by her daughters, Anita Weber of El Paso, Teresa Swinney of League City, TX. and Yolanda Cortez (Ernesto) of El Paso; daughter in law Marie Victoria Ortega; eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Service will be held Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at Martin Funeral Home East 1460 George Dieter. Viewing 1:00-3:00 pm. Rosary 3:00-3:30 pm. Scripture service 4:00-4:30 pm. Reception 4:30-5:00 pm.

Committal will be held Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at Ft Bliss National Cemetery at 10:00 am.

Our family would like to thank all home health-caregivers, clergy, friends and Hope Castillo, life-long friend, that provided mom with loving care. We are profoundly grateful.
