

Mike was born in Evanston, Illinois, grew up in El Paso, Texas. He was a graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso and a Vietnam veteran. His adventurous spirit led him far beyond home—taking him to Alaska and destinations around the world, experiences that shaped his stories and perspective on life. He lived a life defined by the warmth, curiosity, and genuine kindness he extended to others.
He was a vibrant and uniquely engaging person who never met a stranger. Mike had a gift for connection—whether over a simple cup of coffee or a chance encounter, he could turn a conversation into a lasting friendship. His easy smile and sincere interest in others left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Jean and Herbert Bassett; William Monro; his siblings Sterling Bassett and Gretchen Hinman. Mike is survived by his daughter, Molly Monro; his brother, Michael Bassett and wife, Elizabeth Bassett, along with their children CJ and Kyle Bassett; his sister, Jan Bassett, and her children Zach Karam, wife Lindsey and their children, Leta Powell, husband Robert and their children.
A visitation will be held on April 8 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home West. Burial services will take place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. on April 9, followed by a reception from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home, 128 Resler Drive, El Paso, Texas.
