Ida Grant, 90, passed away on Monday, September 5, 2016. Ida Grant was born on July 22, 1926 in Spital am Phyrn, Austria. She had 2 brothers and 3 sisters. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, 2 brothers, sister and the love of her life of 61 years Robert Grant. Ida’s siblings all completed a primary education which was mandatory at the time. Ida was the only one in the family to attend “Hauptshule”. She had to travel 7 kilometers on a bus, quite an adventure for a girl at that time. During the war it was mandatory for everyone to work and Ida had to work on a farm. After the war Ida’s mother washed clothes for the American Soldiers and Ida had to deliver them. Ida met Bob and they began dating. When Bob’s tour was up he asked her if she wanted to come to the USA. Once again being adventurous, Ida set out on her trip to El Paso, Texas where they were united in holy matrimony. As much as Ida loved visiting her native Austria, she always thought of El Paso as her home. She enjoyed working in the meat department at a local food store. She was active in the El Paso community attending as many public meetings as possible to fight for the city. She was also active with the retired workers of El Paso Electric Company for which Bob worked for many years. She enjoyed attending mass at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church. Ida is survived by her sisters Karoline Kidhl, Leopoldine Hutter, numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Rescue Mission or to the Humane Society of El Paso. Special thanks to the staff at Visiting Angels and to Hospice of El Paso for the excellent care given to Ida. Visitation will be held from 5:00pm-9:00pm Sunday, September 11, 2016 with a Rosary to begin at 7:00pm at Hillcrest Funeral Home East. A Scripture Service will be held at 12:30pm Monday, September 12, 2016 at Hillcrest Funeral Home East. A Committal Service will follow at 1:30pm Monday, September 12, 2016 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
