

Irene Yolanda Escobar passed away peacefully on July 5, 2016, she was 77 years old. Vigil and a Celebration of Life will be held on July 21 at 2:00p.m. at F.D.A. Martin East, 1460 George Dieter. Funeral Mass will be July 22 at 9:00a.m. at Nazareth Hall Chapel, 4614 Trowbridge. Irene was a strong and loving individual who advocated for women’s, teacher’s and Chicano rights. Active in numerous civic and community projects she led the Mexican American Women’s Association, the Ysleta Teachers Association and the El Paso Commission for Women, to name a few. Irene was an educator for 45 years. She taught elementary, special education and retired as a librarian. She graduated from Austin High at age 15 and then went to Texas Western College and graduated at 19, she was teaching by age 20, later she received her Masters in Education. Irene was an avid crafter. She loved to knit, crochet and sew, all skills learned from her mother. Irene also loved to travel and enjoyed the arts. A loving women and mother, survived by daughter, “Bonnie” Sara Yvonne, brother David Holguin, nieces Vicky & Tammy Holguin and nephew, David Holguin. She is preceded in death by mother, Leonor Rivera Holguin, father, Jose Guadalupe Holguin and brother, Richard Benjamin Holguin.
