John Byron Hogan passed away on March 15, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer lasting several years. Born on June 7, 1956, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, John was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Rita Hogan, and his sister, Mary Ellen. He graduated from Eastwood High School in 1974 and later earned his degree from the University of Texas at El Paso, following his service in the United States Air Force.
John is survived by his wife, Tracy; his brother, Mark; his sister, Monica Bearden (Rick); and his children, Melanie, Jennifer, David, and Kaitlynn. He was a proud Veteran and Patriot, deeply involved in El Paso politics as a Precinct Chair and a candidate for El Paso City Council. Prior to his illnesses, John worked as a professional photographer, and in earlier years, he was an avid skydiver.
Known for his larger-than-life presence and unfiltered personality, John was both endearing and sometimes maddening to those around him. He enjoyed spirited debates (also known as arguing) and always brought laughter to those he encountered, even throughout his illness. The family acknowledges the special relationships John maintained with Kim Barnett Watters (Doug) and the Barnett family, as well as Tracy’s siblings: Cyndi (Mike), Tim (Rosie), and Kristy (Louis). He is also remembered by his nephew, Patrick Hogan, and his niece, Vicki Hogan-Kapsner. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Casa de Los Abuelos foster home, including David Sanchez, Andrea, and Brenda, in addition to Remarkable Hospice for their support and care.
A service to honor John’s life will be held at Martin Funeral Home East, located at 1460 George Dieter Dr., on Monday, April 6. Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A service will be held at 5:30 p.m. He will be laid to rest at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery at another time.
In keeping with John’s wishes, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Animal Rescue League of El Paso, Tunnel to Towers, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or Shriners Hospitals for Children. These organizations reflect causes that were important to John.
Visitation will be held at Martin Funeral Home East, 1460 George Dieter Dr, El Paso, Texas 79936, on April 6, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, with a Memorial Service the same day from 6:00 pm to 6:45 pm.
