Born in El Paso, Texas, the youngest of seven children. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Mickey Ortiz. Johnny is survived by his son, Jonathan Chase Ortiz (partner Katie Seals), his step-daughter Natasha Jost (Husband Sean and daughter Mackenzie), his six siblings and their families, Curley Ortiz (wife Mary), Bobby Ortiz, Odette Thomas (husband Steve), Letty Carrasco (husband Pete), Maureen Keton (husband Frank, deceased), Maggie Sullivan (husband Kim, deceased).
Johnny graduated from Canutillo High School in 1976, having served as President of his FFA Chapter. Early in his life he pursued a career in semi-trucking, which he was well known for. Johnny was first married to Cindy Ford, then later to Vickie Smallwood. Johnny transitioned to working at the Sunland Park and Ruidoso Downs Racetracks as he supported Vickie in her horse racing career. Later in life, Johnny returned to trucking on a smaller scale, hauling vehicles for hire often accompanied by his son.
Many know that Johnny enjoyed racing street stocks at the Southern New Mexico and El Paso Speedways, which earned him the nickname “Lightpole Johnny”. This passion is now shared by his son Chase who races at Vado Speedway, among other dirt tracks, for whom Johnny helped in the pit crew.
Johnny loved his family, especially his siblings and best friend Gary Yocom. He carried an immense love for his son Chase and step-daughter Natasha. A good man who loved living life, he will be missed by a multitude of good friends and relatives.
