On Friday, June 24, 2022 Jose “Butch” Campa Jr., beloved by so many, passed away. Butch was born in El Paso, Texas on May 31, 1944. Raised in “El Segundo Barrio”, he was a proud graduate of Bowie High School in 1962. As a boy, he developed a love of sports playing football, basketball and baseball for The Boys Club and neighborhood church leagues. He was a star football player for Bowie and was inducted to Bowie High School’s Hall of Fame. He continued to play sports as an adult including softball, golf and racquetball. His passion for sports continued in his role as the Sports Director for Parks and Recreation for the City of El Paso. His proudest career accomplishment was bringing the Games of Texas to El Paso, the first and only time the city has hosted this Adult Amateur Athletic sports event. In 1999 he became a Life Member of the TAAF. Following retirement, he moved to California, where he spent 10 years working for the city of Anaheim, playing golf, and being a grandfather. He returned home to El Paso, where he spent the remainder of his life enjoying family, friends and the Open Arms Catholic Charismatic Community.
He is preceded in death by his parents Natalia Rodriguez and Jose Campa, Sr.; brothers Armando and Manuel; sisters Angelita and Maria Ana. He is survived by his wife, friend and partner Lupe Campa; his daughter Cynthia Shenkman (Michael); his son Adrian Campa; granddaughter Julia Linda Shenkman; sisters Olga Diaz, Juana Campa and Delia Paniagua (Johnny); Brother-in-Law Roberto Vasquez and Sister-in-Law Emma Campa.
A visitation for Butch will be held on Sunday, July 10, 2022 from 5:00PM to 9:00PM with the Rosary to begin at 7:00PM at Hillcrest Funeral Home, 1060 North Carolina Dr., El Paso, Texas 79915. The Funeral Mass will be on Monday, July 11, 2022 at 11:00AM at St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish on 408 Park St., El Paso, Texas 79936. Graveside Service will be at 12:30PM at Mount Carmel Cemetery, 401 S. Zaragoza Rd., El Paso, Texas 79907
