“Freddy” to his family, “Joe” to many of his friends
August 24, 1957 – September 23, 2026
Jose Alfredo Poblano, 69, of El Paso, Texas, passed away on September 23, 2026, surrounded by his loving children.
Born on August 24, 1957, in El Paso to Guillermo and Velia Poblano, Jose was known as Freddy by his family, a nickname taken from his middle name, Alfredo. In middle school, he began going by Joe, derived from Jose, and many friends, classmates, coworkers, and others knew him by that name. Whatever they called him, they knew the same quiet, easygoing man who was deeply loved.
The oldest of five children, Freddy was also the first grandchild born on both sides of his family to Josefa Poblano on his father’s side and Benito and Aurora Rosales on his mother’s side. His first name honored his paternal grandmother, Josefa Poblano, creating a family connection he carried throughout his life.
Freddy spent his early childhood in Buena Vista, known as Smeltertown, until 1965, when his parents purchased their first home in the Lakeside area of El Paso's Lower Valley. He spent the rest of his childhood and formative years there.
As the oldest sibling, Freddy was quiet, respectful, and dependable. He rarely argued, listened to his parents, and could always be counted on to help his family. His calm nature remained with him throughout his life; he preferred peace and wanted everyone to get along.
Freddy’s Catholic faith was introduced to him early. As a young boy, he served for several years as an altar boy at Little Flower Catholic Church, and the faith and values he learned there remained important throughout his life.
He attended Riverside High School, graduating with the Class of 1975. He took tremendous pride in being a Riverside Ranger, and that pride remained with him for decades. Riverside became part of his identity and held a special place in his heart.
One of Freddy’s first jobs was at Michelino's, an Italian restaurant on Montana Avenue. His family fondly remembered that whenever he worked, he might come home with pizza. Sharing those pizzas became cherished memories for his brothers and sister.
After high school, Freddy attended community college before beginning a career at ASARCO in El Paso. He worked there for more than 25 years, including many years alongside his father, Guillermo. After the El Paso operation closed, Freddy began a second career in security and eventually became a security officer with Clint Independent School District, where he remained until retirement.
Cars were one of Freddy’s great passions. Coming of age in El Paso during the 1970s, he embraced lowrider culture and took tremendous pride in his automobiles, especially his beloved white 1977 Monte Carlo, customized with spoke wheels and hydraulics. He also had a 1973 Impala that was customized with spoke wheels.
Freddy joined Moments Car Club in El Paso and enjoyed its friendships, music, cars, and sense of community. He could often be found cruising around Ascarate Park, near the Lakeside neighborhood where he grew up. To him, the cars represented an era of life he loved.
Music was part of those memories. Freddy especially enjoyed WAR and Santana, and WAR’s "Lowrider” was his favorite song—a fitting choice for someone who loved lowriders, music, and cruising.
In 1980, Freddy married Olga Lydia. Together they welcomed their first son, Jose "Joey" Alfredo Poblano, Jr., followed by their daughter, Krystal Ann, and youngest son, David Alexander. Although Freddy and Olga later divorced, they remained good friends and shared a lasting bond through their children and grandchildren.
Fatherhood was one of the most meaningful parts of Freddy’s life. He loved his children deeply and showed it in the way he knew best: by being present. He showed up. Whether for a game, band performance, school activity, sporting event, or milestone, Freddy was there, quietly supporting his children and taking pride in who they were becoming.
Some of the family’s happiest memories came from traveling together, especially camping in Ruidoso, New Mexico. Freddy loved getting away with his family and taking to the road. He loved to drive.
His grandchildren brought him another kind of joy. He was immensely proud of Daniel Garcia, Emily Poblano, Victoria Poblano, and Anisa Brower, delighting in their growth and accomplishments. As with his children, he showed his love by attending their games, activities, performances, celebrations, and important moments.
Freddy was eagerly awaiting the arrival of his granddaughter, Annalise Brower. Though he would not have the chance to hold her, she was already loved and had a place in his heart. He also leaves behind his two beloved fur grandchildren Webby and Lydia Ann.
He was also a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan. Whether cheering for the Cowboys, supporting his Riverside Rangers, or sitting in the stands for someone he loved, Freddy was loyal.
Those who knew Freddy knew his routines, opinions, advice, humor, and unmistakable personality. Beneath it all was a man who loved his family deeply, took pride in them, and wanted them to succeed.
Freddy was preceded in death by his parents Guillermo and Velia Poblano, and by Olga Lydia, the mother of his children.
He is survived by his children, Jose "Joey" Alfredo Poblano Jr. (Azucena), Krystal Ann Poblano (David Brower) and David Alexander Poblano, his four beloved grandchildren; and his siblings, Ramon “Monie" Poblano (Marie Ida Poblano), Richard Poblano, Karen Poblano-Fomby (Nathaniel Fomby), and Gilbert Poblano, along with his extended family and the many people whose lives he touched.
Yet even in our grief, we are grateful. Grateful for 69 years of Freddy. Grateful for the father and grandfather he became, for the brother he was, for every story, every laugh, every opinion, every ordinary moment, and every memory that now means more than we ever imagined it would.
Freddy’s life will continue through his children, his grandchildren, his siblings, and everyone who carries a piece of him in their hearts.
Our family takes comfort in our Catholic faith and in God’s promise of eternal life. We entrust our beloved Freddy to the mercy and love of Jesus Christ, praying that he is at peace and that perpetual light now shines upon him.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
Forever our father.
Forever our grandfather.
Forever our brother.
Forever loved.
