Joseph Alvan Roberts, 85, grandson of C. J. Roberts, First Supreme Court Justice of the New Mexico and Alvan White, First State School Superintendent and Speaker of the House, passed away on February 24, 2018 after a brief illness. Joseph was born on March 3, 1932 in Santa Fe, NM to Bernard Stewart Roberts and Arneille White Roberts. Joe loved traveling, classical music, reading, history and his family. He graduated from New Mexico State University and University of Wyoming’s College of Law. Joe practiced law in Santa Fe from 1963 to 1994. Joe was an admirer of beauty, a raconteur, a cornucopia of historical knowledge, world traveler, a lover of classical music, and a regular at the Barnes & Noble salon, where he frequently held court. He was funny, smart, stubborn, and unique.
He is survived by his wife of forty years, Sara Corlett-Roberts, and his sister, Dolona Roberts, both of El Paso, TX; his children, Albert Roberts, Kathlynn Roberts, Zara Park and husband Bryan Park, and grandchildren: Marina Gonzales, Patrick Gonzales, Alexa Baca, Alana Roberts, Laney Roberts and Jayden Park.
A masonic graveside service will be held in the summer in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Animal Rescue League of El Paso. His memory will be carried in the hearts of the people he knew.
