Born on April 18th, 1946, to Valente and Josephina Medina, he grew up in Central El Paso with eight siblings. They lived close enough to the railroad and hopped on trains from Socorro to New Mexico for fun. His brothers and sisters all had nicknames; Juan's was "Juanete."
Juan was a proud Golden Panther and graduated from Austin High School in '65 and joined the US Navy soon after. He proudly served his country for six years. In 1971, while delivering magazines, he met his wife and life-long partner, Virginia Medina. A four-month courtship led to a forty-nine-year marriage. Juan Medina was an attendance officer for the Ysleta Independent School District for thirty-eight years. He was also a precinct judge for local, state, and federal elections, from Reagan's first run to Obama's last. He also served as a behind-the-scenes "Spirt Server" for his wife's Catholic ministry squad, earning him the nickname "San Juan."
Juan Medina was proud to leave this world without any tattoos or earrings. The last time he wore denim was dungarees during his service in the Navy. If you called Juan, he would drop what he was doing and help you out. He did love his "gato naps." Many looked to Juan as a father they never had, or a husband, or a friend. He gave the best advice he could provide if you didn't take it, "pues ni modo." He would still be there if you took it or not. Juan loved dogs and cats, feeding them well.
Juan was very proud of the two boys that called him "Dad." He was a very devoted and encouraging father. Juan's favorite nickname, of course, was "Juanis," given to him by his loyal and loving wife, Ginny.
Juan is preceded in death by his parents, Valente and Josephina, his siblings Guadalupe, Mike, Valente Jr., Chavela, and Alex. Surviving him is his devoted and loving wife, Virginia, and his sons, Eric and Andrew. Gilbert, Conrad, and his sister Martha. Daughters -in-laws, Lucinda and Gina Medina. Grandchildren Vanessa, Desiree, and Marcos. Sister-in-law Laura Valenzuela and Pat Zamora. Juan had various nieces and nephews.
Juan Medina is sorely missed but will be remembered forever for his servant's heart.
Pray for us, "San Juan."
