Len Martin

August 15, 1950 – September 1, 2026

Leonard Neil “Len” Martin passed away peacefully on September 1, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on August 15, 1950, in Eden, North Carolina, Len carried a lifelong love for the Tar Heel State - from its mountains to its coast and everywhere in between. North Carolina was always home to him, and he took great pride in where he came from and in the life he built along the way.

Len lived a life defined by people. He had a remarkable ability to connect with others, to encourage them, to believe in them, and, quite often, to leave them a little better than he found them.

After graduating from Morehead High School in Eden, Len attended Appalachian State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree and continued his love of athletics as a member of both the football and wrestling teams. He later earned his master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

He began his professional life in education, first serving as an administrator and later finding one of his great passions on the football field as a middle and high school coach. Along the way, Len followed a great mentor and friend into college athletics, where he coached both wrestling and football. While he valued that experience, it ultimately helped Len realize where his heart truly belonged: coaching at the high school level. He returned home to Eden and to his alma mater, Morehead High School, where he continued doing what he loved.

To Len, coaching was about far more than wins and losses. He cared deeply about the young men entrusted to him and worked to develop them not only into better football players, but into better men. The lessons he taught extended well beyond the field, and his influence remained with many of his players long after the final whistle.

Len would later embark on another successful career in financial services, working throughout the years with MassMutual, John Hancock, New England Financial, Bankers Life, BBVA, and Wells Fargo. As was so often the case with Len, professional relationships had a way of becoming personal ones. Many coworkers and clients became treasured friends, and he valued those friendships immensely.

Along the way, Len met the love of his life, Malinda. The two were married on March 27, 2008, beginning a chapter of his life that brought him tremendous happiness. Through their marriage, Len became a stepfather to Joey and Dylan, a role he embraced wholeheartedly. He loved them, supported them, celebrated their successes, and was deeply proud of the family they became.

Len is survived by his loving wife, Malinda Martin; his stepsons, Joey Lucero and his wife, Emily, and Dylan Lucero; along with the many family members, friends, former players, colleagues, and clients whose lives were made richer by knowing him.

Len was proud of the life he built and considered himself blessed by the life he lived and, most of all, by the people with whom he shared it. His was a life filled with meaningful work, lasting friendships, football, laughter, love, and countless memories made with the people who mattered most.

Those who knew Len will remember him in their own way - as a husband, a stepfather, a coach, a colleague, a mentor, or a friend. But woven through each of those memories will be the same man: someone who cared deeply, loved his family fiercely, believed in people, and left an imprint that will remain long after his passing.

In keeping with Len’s wishes, his family will honor his life privately with a family celebration of life.

And that is exactly as Len would have wanted it: surrounded by family, remembered with love, and celebrated for a life well lived.
