Lucia "Tillie" Tejeda

Tillie was born in El Paso on December 13, 1928, first child to Velia Rodriguez and Jose Martinez. She spent her early life assisting her mother by caring for her brother and grandmother, and later met and married Antonio S. Tejeda. Together they raised a beautiful family while remaining active members of the community. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and great-aunt, known for her unmatched kindness, compassion, and love of spending time with family and friends. She always made others feel celebrated and special through her high-spirits and extraordinary joyfulness.

Tillie was instrumental in the beginnings of the Our Lady of Light Church in Central El Paso. Along with her husband, Tillie led efforts to organize and construct the church within their community, and went on to teach catechism and maintain the ecclesiastical vestments for the clergy. She was a devout Catholic and demonstrated her faith through her tireless contributions.

Tillie is survived by her daughters, Alicia T. Gomez and Billie Marie Skidmore; five grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Tony Tejeda; sister, Velia Gomez; and brother, Armando Martinez.

A viewing will be held on November 2, 2023, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Martin Funeral Home East, 1460 George Dieter, El Paso, TX 79936. A Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM during the viewing. The burial will occur on November 3, 2023, at 9:00 AM at the Ft. Bliss Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson Ave., El Paso, TX 79906. Call 915-245-0149 for more information.

Tillie's legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. A venerated matron and cherished friend – Tillie will be deeply missed.
